<p>We know how difficult the school year can feel and we are hoping for 2023 to be our best summer yet. We are so excited to welcome you back to our home at Delaware Valley University. We, of course, are bringing back your favorites, but we are hoping to get your input on new activities or meals you might want to see this summer, because it is all about YOU.</p>
<p>Camp Pennbrook is eager to provide you with a fun, healthy summer to provide you with tools you need to continue making lifestyle changes at home.</p>

<p>Happy Holidays! It’s hard to believe camp ended in August and we’re going into the Holiday Season. But the Holidays can be hard… surrounded by tons of food at parties and family dinners, the crisp, chilly air can make it hard to motivate yourself to get outside, and it gets dark out so early. Don’t let the Holidays be your downfall! Use these tips from our wellness camp&#8217;s dietician to create the perfect Healthy Holidays for you!</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<ol>
<li>Find your support system: Maybe it’s your mom, your dad, your best friend, or your camp BFF (we all have one! *cough SUNI JOANNA cough*) but if you know the Holidays are a time of year where your eating habits can flop, turn to someone for support. You can help motivate each other and keep each other on track.</li>
</ol>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<ol start="2">
<li>Use FACT: One of my favorite tools, make FACT work for you around your favorite holiday dishes! Let’s use mashed potatoes for an example: frequency – not having mashed potatoes at every holiday dinner, amount – only eating a portion size, combination – eating steamed baby carrots with your mashed potatoes, type – making hummus mashed potatoes (see the recipe included in the newsletter).</li>
</ol>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<ol start="3">
<li>Be mindful: Don’t eat if you’re not hungry. As we learned this year in RAP, when we eat more than our body needs, we store that extra energy, which is simply the extra fat we may carry on our bodies. Stopping to ask yourself “Am I really hungry?” can be a game changer. If you are hungry, go ahead and eat something, but if you’re not hungry, try to distract yourself by taking a walk, wrapping gifts, or talking on the phone with a friend.</li>
</ol>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<ol start="4">
<li>Be distraction free: It’s easy to plop down on the couch with a plate full of holiday leftovers and watch what’s new on TV, but this can easily lead to taking in more energy than your body actually needs. When we distracted eat, our bodies stop focusing on when we’re full and start focusing on the TV instead. Try to keep eating to the kitchen or the dining room table… without your phone!</li>
</ol>

<li>And most importantly, remember everything in moderation! One of the best part of the Holidays is the food, so remember you don’t need to restrict yourself and never have Grandma’s apple pie again… just don’t eat the whole pie! Treat yourself to a slice and walk away. If you’re still hungry, grab a piece of fruit or some veggies.</li>

<div dir="ltr">We hope that everyone is safe and adjusting to some sort of home routine.  All of our weight loss camp sessions and programs as of now are taking place as scheduled, unless the school that hosts our program or any agencies in those areas impose restrictions for the summer. In the meantime, here are some questions you should be asking regarding this coming summer at Camp Pennbrook:</div>

<div dir="ltr"><strong>1)  Can you tell us about the background and qualifications of your medical staff? </strong></div>
<div dir="ltr"></div>
<div dir="ltr">We have trained medical staff on campus and are fortunate to have 3 of last years nurses returning this summer. Samantha, Ruth and Sara, who know the campers and staff and are familiar with the facilities. The medical staff are very experienced in their field and know how to treat sick and injured campers and will have an orientation on Covid-19, and actions to take. They can also detect any signs and symptoms before anyone else.</div>

<div dir="ltr"><strong>2) What medical resources are close to your campus? </strong></div>
<div dir="ltr"></div>
<div dir="ltr">The George School is less than 1/2 mile (1 minute) from St. Marys Hospital in Yardley, PA, which is a major trauma facility. A number of urgent care and doctors offices are only 5 minutes away.  We are not in the woods so prompt medical care is only minutes away.</div>

<div dir="ltr"><strong>3) What protocols and procedures will you follow if Covid-19 in on campus?  Which parties are influencing your Summer Camp decisions? </strong></div>

<div dir="ltr">We have received a lot of information and regular updates from the <a href="https://www.acacamps.org/">American Camping Association</a>, along with the operations director of our school who in turn are in touch with the local authorities. We will abide by any medical decisions and protocol that they deem appropriate. The camp&#8217;s medical staff has a plan in place to protect other campers should one get sick.</div>

<div dir="ltr"><strong>4) What happens if school is extended into the summer? Do you have any other options that will permit you to start the program later in the summer? </strong></div>

<div dir="ltr">As of now, camp starts on Saturday, June 20th and runs through Saturday, August 8th. At some point, we may have to change the start date so that you can still attend this summer, and attend sessions later in the summer, or possibly provide an alternate site location. The minimum stay at Camp Pennbrook is still two weeks and our dates are flexible.</div>

<div dir="ltr"><strong>5) How can we stay updated on Covid-19?</strong></div>

<div dir="ltr"> There are many resources available including <a href="http://www.cbc.gov/coronavirus2019-ncov/index.html">the CDC.</a> Also, you can check with your individual state as well as the state of Pennsylvania and the local government and your travel carriers, including airlines, busses, and trains.</div>

<div dir="ltr"><strong>6) How will Camp Pennbrook wellness camp keep us updated with any changes or new information?</strong></div>

<p><strong>March is National Nutrition Month and 2020&#8217;s <a href="https://nutrition.org/national-nutrition-month-2020/">National Nutrition Month</a> theme is “Eat Right, Bite By Bite.”</strong> which at <a href="http://www.camppennbrook.com">Camp Pennbrook</a> weight loss camps means promoting lifestyle changes in order to live a healthier life. Not only do our campers come to our weight loss camp to lose weight, the kids also learn healthy and sustainable eating habits that will help keep the weight off.</p>
<p>Camp Pennbrook&#8217;s <a href="https://camppennbrook.com/about/nutrition-at-camp-pennbrook/">Registered Dietitian</a> teaches campers that a healthier lifestyle combines physical activity and a healthy diet.  It is important to watch our food intake and make wise food decisions, as well as, incorporating physical activity into our daily routine. More importantly having a healthier lifestyle not only helps you lose weight it also improves your overall heath and sense of well-being.</p>
<p>Registered Dietitian, Ximena<strong> </strong>Jimenez<strong>, </strong>for the<strong> <a href="https://www.eatright.org/">Eat Right Organization</a>,</strong> recommends doing 60 minutes of physical activity a day as well as choosing nutrient-rich foods and beverages, and offers <strong>wellness tips for healthful food choices:</strong></p>

<ul>
<li>At every meal, fill half your plate with a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables.</li>
<li>Make at least half the grains you eat whole grains, such as whole-wheat bread and pasta, quinoa, oats and brown rice. Check the food label, the first ingredient listed should be &#8220;whole grain&#8221; or &#8220;whole wheat.&#8221;</li>
<li>Choose healthy protein sources, such as lean meats and poultry, seafood, beans and peas, eggs and nuts and seeds.</li>
<li>Eat low-fat dairy foods. If you&#8217;re sensitive to lactose, try calcium-fortified soy beverages.</li>
<li>Limit foods with added fats, sugars and salt.</li>
</ul>

<p>Every summer at Camp Pennbrook wellness camp we teach our campers how to make their favorite meals in a healthier manner. Many of them are surprised to learn that they can still enjoy some of their favorite foods and stick to their weight loss journey. This past summer at our weight loss summer camp, girls were excited to participate in our first Master Chef competition in which they were put to the test and had to cook their own meals with the given ingredients.</p>
<p>During these activities campers learned many valuable techniques when it comes to cooking. One of the most valuable perhaps would be the importance of the flavor of food. It’s very simple to swap certain seasonings and condiments in order to make your meal not only healthier but also tastier.</p>
<h3>Try these simple weight loss cooking tips:</h3>
<p><strong>-Add color to your meals and flavor as well by using red, green and yellow peppers</strong></p>
<p><strong>-Cooking techniques such as grilling or broiling always bring out the best on your protein dishes </strong></p>
<p><strong>-Spice it up with garlic powder, cayenne pepper, rosemary and oregano</strong></p>

<p>As much as I can&#8217;t believe it is already the holidays and not the hot-sunny days at camp, I am so excited to be writing to you all about how to survive through the holiday season with health and fitness! As it gets cold outside, it gets harder and harder to get out of our nice cozy beds and follow through with our workout routine! There&#8217;s time off of school, holiday parties, gifts to wrap and quality time to be spent with family and friends.  I have a few tips and tricks to stay motivated during the holidays to get your workouts in .</p>
<ol>
<li>Find Your Fire:  In order to maintain and overcome barriers to our successes, you must find your fire; your WHY. Why do you want to be healthy? Why do you want to see results? When you can see all the reasons you want to live this lifestyle, you can inspire yourself to achieve them. There has to be something that motivates you. Find it and go with it.</li>
</ol>
<ol start="2">
<li>Find Your Support System: You don&#8217;t have to live a healthy lifestyle alone. Find a few friends who continuously motivate and inspire you to be your best self. My two wonderful camp friends (RD Tori and Flappers GL Suni) have a group chat that we talk in daily. It doesn&#8217;t always have to be a conversation about fruits and veggies or cardio classes but knowing that they people who you can relate to are always on your side is a great way to stay motivated in daily activities. Support by others is sometimes all we need to reach our goals. It&#8217;s a little extra push that we can&#8217;t give to ourselves.</li>
</ol>
<ol start="3">
<li>Plan Ahead: Get a planner, sticky note your desk, set an alarm on your phone. Find what works best for you but plan ahead! If we schedule in when we want to do our exercise, and make it a scheduled event, we are more likely to actually do it. Its like writing down a homework assignment, or someone&#8217;s birthday. It&#8217;s something we need to do, and one thing we don&#8217;t want to forget.</li>
</ol>
<ol start="4">
<li>Get Your Family Involved: Family and the holidays go hand in hand so why not get them involved! There are many themed 5k (3.1 miles) running events like Thanksgiving Turkey Trots, Holiday Ugly Christmas Sweater races and many more in most local towns and areas. Take on this fun and rewarding challenge with your family! Tackle 3 miles dressed in costumes and feel good about it.</li>
</ol>

<li>Set a Goal: When setting a goal it is important to know your bodies limits and to set goals that are attainable and realistic. Start small, get to that point and keep climbing! Although you should have your limitations in mind, the ultimate goal should be to push past your limitations. You ultimately have no limits when you set your goals accordingly.</li>
</ol>
<ol start="6">
<li>Give Yourself Time: No one wants to hear this one but results take time. Do not get frustrated when you do not see the results you want right when you want them. You must put forth effort CONSISTENTLY and CONTINUOUSLY.</li>
</ol>

<p>Statistics show that nearly half of the nation’s girls are unhappy with their bodies. I was once one of those girls. Constantly questioning how I looked and why did I look the way I did. Luckily I grew up in a loving and supportive environment in which I was reminded every day how beautiful and how loved I was. Still with this outpouring love from my family I still felt “bigger” than the rest and different from all my friends.</p>
<p>At 12 years old I asked to go to weight loss camp. Little did I know that what was once a summer away from home to lose weight would turn into an amazing journey of self-discovery and empowerment. During my stay at weigh loss camp I went through ups and down but the end result was amazing. I left feeling confident and better about myself.</p>
<p>High School years weren’t easy and eventually some of the weight came back. I was too focused on getting into college and didn’t make the time for myself. Spring semester of my sophomore year I had revelation and realized that if I didn’t make the right changes now it could be too late. I started to eat healthier and work out 4 days a week and before I knew it I had dropped almost 20 lbs. on my own. This amazing feeling made me want to go back to that weight loss camp that once made me felt that good and give back to all those girls.</p>
<p>I have been working at Camp Pennbrook for the past 9 summer of my life. Yes that is correct 9 summers. Every summer I’m inspired and amazed by what we do at our weight loss camp and how confident our girls leave at the end of the summer. Spending a summer in a nonjudgmental environment in which you are encouraged every day to be your best is the most amazing way to spend a summer away from home.</p>
<p>Weight loss camps are more than just a place to actually lose the weight. It is a place to spend your summers working on your inner self and rebuild your confidence so you feel empowered to do anything you want in life. If you ever have the opportunity to go to weight loss camp, please do, I promise you won’t regret it.</p>
